New Delhi’s experience with natural gas vehicles is unequalled anywhere in the world. Commencing with a Supreme Court mandate in 1998, the CNG program saw rapid growth in the number of vehicles on the road as well as a rapidly established natural gas distribution and CNG refueling network. The successes in Delhi are now being replicated in other cities throughout India. This session explores the challenges that were met, the lessons learnt and glimpses into the future of natural gas vehicles in Delhi.

Solving the Refueling Dilemma Mr. Manjit Singh – Chief General Manager, Indraprastha Gas Ltd Indra Prastha Gas Ltd was formed in 1998, assuming responsibility for natural gas distribution and retail in New Delhi. With the rapid onset of demand brought about the by the Supreme Court mandates IGL was under intense pressure to distribute gas and establish refueling stations in record time. Now with more than 166 operational CNG refueling stations, supplying fuel for more than 2,50,000 vehicles, IGL shares the strategies implemented in establishing this network, and outlines future plans for Delhi and the NCT area.

The organization now has more than 3,000 CNG buses and will introduce another 5,000 before the end of 2010.
